Coordination in Hybrid Type-logical Categorial Grammar

چکیده
We formulate explicit analyses of certain non-standard coordination examples discussed in Levine (2011) in a variant of categorial grammar called Hybrid Type-Logical Categorial Grammar (Kubota 2010; Kubota & Levine 2012; Kubota to appear). These examples are of theoretical importance since they pose significant challenges to the currently most explicit and most comprehensive analysis of coordination, formulated in a variant of HPSG called Linearization-based HPSG (Reape 1996; Kathol 1995) and advocated by various authors in the recent literature (Yatabe 2001; Crysmann 2003; Beavers & Sag 2004; Chaves 2007; Sag & Chaves 2008). This approach, which we call the Linearization-Based Ellipsis (LBE) approach to coordination, builds on the key idea that apparent non-standard coordination all reduce to constituent coordination under surface ellipsis. The seemingly heterogeneous set of data catalogued in Levine (2011), involving different types of non-standard coordination, uniformly point to an analysis in which the apparently incomplete constituents that are coordinated in the overt string are in fact complete (i.e. nonelliptical) constituents with full-fledged semantic interpretation, thus directly counterexemplifying the predictions of ellipsis-based approaches including the LBE variant. Japanese Categorial Grammar Based on Term and Sentence
In this paper, I propose a japanese categorial grammar JCG which gives a foundation of semantic parsing of Japanese. JCG is not an orthodox categorial grammar with functional application, composition etc., but a hybrid system with HPSG based on term and sentence which correspond to the nominal head and verbal head in HPSG respectively. Construction rules of JCG are designed so as to be used as ...
متن کاملBook Review: Categorial Grammar: Logical Syntax, Semantics, and Processing by Glyn V. Morrill
The title of this book, Categorial Grammar: Logical Syntax, Semantics, and Processing, indicates that this will be a book about categorial grammar. In the preface, however, several strains of categorial grammar are discussed, including combinatory categorial grammar (Steedman 2000), pregroup grammar (Lambek 1999), and abstract categorial grammar (de Groote 2001), and it is clarified that the bo...

Hybrid type-logical grammars (Kubota & Levine 2012, Kubota & Levine 2013c, Kubota & Levine 2013a) are a relatively new framework in computational linguistics, which combines insights from the Lambek calculus (Lambek 1958) and lambda grammars (Oehrle 1994, Muskens 2001, Muskens 2003)— lambda grammars are also called, depending on the authors, abstract categorial grammars (de Groote 2001) and lin...
متن کاملComputing Scope in a CCG Parser
Ambiguities arising from alternations of scope in interpretations for multiply quantified sentences appear to require grammatical operations that compromise the strong assumptions of syntactic/semantic transparency and monotonicity underlying the Frege-Montague approach to the theory of grammar. Examples that have been proposed include covert movement at the level of logical form, abstraction o...
متن کاملThe Phenogrammar of Coordination
Linear Categorial Grammar (LinCG) is a sign-based, Curryesque, relational, logical categorial grammar (CG) whose central architecture is based on linear logic. Curryesque grammars separate the abstract combinatorics (tectogrammar) of linguistic expressions from their concrete, audible representations (phenogrammar). Most of these grammars encode linear order in string-based lambda terms, in whi...
